Cristiano Ronaldo’s future at Manchester United is under significant threat once again after he lashed out at several key figures at Old Trafford in an explosive interview over the weekend.

The likes of Erik ten Hag, the Glazer family, Ralf Rangnick and high-ranking officials within the United hierachy all came under fire in a wide-ranging interview that seemed to be designed to give Ronaldo a chance to end his second spell with the 13-time Premier League champions. It’s not the first time the former Juventus forward has caused controversy with comments during his time in the North West after referring to himself as a slave during his first spell with the club after he was denied a chance to join Real Madrid during the summer of 2008.

What is Ronaldo’s current contract status?

Ronaldo agreed to a second spell at Old Trafford in the summer of 2021 after he departed Juventus. A move to Manchester City looked to be in the offing but it was their cross-city rivals that were able to tempt their former star to return. That saw Ronaldo put pen-to-paper on a lucrative two-year deal, meaning he will be able to depart United on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Perhaps more significantly, given the controversy surrounding his recent interview with Piers Morgan, he will be able to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with a club outside of England before completing the free transfer move at the end of the season. However, given the explosive nature of his comments, Ronaldo could now depart Old Trafford for a second time in a cut-price move during the January transfer window.

What is Ronaldo’s net worth?

Regularly quoted among the richest sportsmen in the world, Ronaldo’s is believed to be worth around £367m after amassing career earning of around £855m. According to a Forbes report, the Portuguese forward earns around £98m from activities outside of football and 40% of his earnings are made through endorsements and sponsorships with the likes of Herbalife, DAZN and LiveScore.

What did Ronaldo say about Manchester United?

It’s easier to state what he didn’t say about the Red Devils but in short, he stated he has ‘no respect’ for United manager Erik ten Hag and suggested he had been betrayed by the club. Club legends Wayne Rooney and Gary Neville also came in for criticism despite sharing a dressing room with Ronaldo during his first spell at Old Trafford. Most significantly, Ronaldo also hit out at the Glazer family and criticised their ownership of the club.

Who has been linked with Ronaldo and could a move now be forced through?

It seems highly unlikely Ronaldo will feature again at Old Trafford when he returns from World Cup Finals duty with Portugal next month. There have been several clubs linked with a move for the forward including former employers Real Madrid and Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, both of whom denied an interest in any deal.

There have been suggested Newcastle United were contacted by his agent Jorge Mendes and Chelsea have once again been linked with the 37-year-old after initial links were reported during the summer transfer window after Ronaldo hit out at United’s failure to secure a place in the Champions League.
