Arsenal’s 4-0 north London derby win over Tottenham Hotspur attracted the division’s largest ever crowd, as the 47,367 supporters who showed up broke the previous record set by a meeting between the two teams at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2019.

Liverpool twice broke their club record crowd in consecutive weeks as 3,000 fans saw their shock opening day win over reigning champions Chelsea at Prenton Park before smashing it again seven days later as an incredible 27,574 people watched the Merseyside derby at Anfield.

Aston Villa also broke their attendance record on the opening day as 6,785 fans turned up to Villa Park for their dramatic 4-3 win over Manchester City.

So far, so good. The new women’s football fans won over by the Lionesses’ storming Euro 2022 success have showed up in numbers, just as captain Leah Williamson hoped.

“Listen, the legacy of this tournament is a change in society,” she insisted in her pitchside interview after England beat Germany 2-1 in the final.

“It’s everything that we’ve done, we’ve brough everybody together, we’ve got people at games.

“We want them to come to WSL games.”

While the men’s stadiums are increasingly being used to host matches involving clubs’ women’s sides, the average capacity of the WSL’s standard home ground is just over 11,000.
