A number of Arsenal players are approaching the end of their contracts with two already agreeing summer exits

Arsenal ended the January transfer window without any new additions as they failed to sign a striker to help bolster their Premier League title bid. The Gunners are six points behind Liverpool, with the league leaders still holding a game in hand over their closest challengers.

Mikel Arteta’s side hammered Manchester City 5-1 on Sunday afternoon to keep the pace with Arne Slot’s side. The Gunners have lost Gabriel Jesus for the season due to an ACL injury while Bukayo Saka is facing another few weeks out after a hamstring injury he sustained in December.

Arsenal made a £60m bid for Ollie Watkins last week and were also linked with moves for Mathys Tel and Benjamin Sesko during the window but no deals were completed. Title rivals Liverpool also opted against new signings midway through the season.

Summer exits agreed

Last week it emerged left-back Kieran Tierney had agreed a pre-contract deal with Celtic as he prepares to return to the Glasgow club. He joined Arsenal from the Scottish champions in 2019 for around £25m. Brendan Rodgers publicly expressed a desire to bring the Scotland international back to Parkhead six months early but the Gunners refused to sanction an early exit.

It has now been reported by Italian journalist Rudy Galetti that Jorginho - who is also in the final months of his deal in North London - has signed a pre-contract deal with Brazilian side Flamengo. The Brazilian outfit also explored the possibility of completing a deal this window but Arsenal were not open to the exit this month. The midfielder has made 20 appearances for the Gunners this season but has fallen down Arteta’s pecking order. He has started just six of the club’s 24 Premier League games and has been left on the bench for the last four matches.

There was the option of another year on Jorginho’s contract but because he has agreed a pre-contract with Flamengo, that option can no longer be activated.

Six more to leave as things stand

As things stand, six more Arsenal players are poised to leave the club this summer as they approach the end of their deals. Two of those are Raheem Sterling and Neto, with the duo on loan at the Emirates Stadium. Thomas Partey is also out of contract in North London this summer but does not have a one-year option in his deal.

Partey signed for the Gunners from La Liga side Atletico Madrid in 2020 for a fee of £42m. He has been more of a regular for Arteta this season compared to Jorginho, making 35 appearances in all competitions. The Ghanaian scored during their win against Manchester City on Sunday, immediately after Erling Haaland scored City’s equaliser. Partey’s goal allowed the Gunners to run away from Pep Guardiola’s side.

Speaking about Partey’s contract situation early last month, Arteta - while also referring to Jorginho’s situation -said: “I don’t want to start to have these conversations now, I want to have these conversations much later because the focus has to be on what we have to do in the season. They can understand the intentions and then we can see what we can do. It’s close communication with them to understand as well what their idea is, what they want to do, express as well our intentions and then let’s decide for everybody what is the best option there.

“But it’s two players that I am very, very happy with. They are such a value in the squad. And I want to keep them as well with the right mind frame, because the most important part of the season is coming now.”

Young players Salah-Eddine Oulad M'Hand, Zane Monlouis and Michal Rosiak are also in the final months of their deals with Arsenal. None of the trio have made their first-team debuts. Ayden Heaven was also close to the end of his contract with the Gunners before he made the switch to Premier League rivals Manchester United.
