Arsenal and Chelsea both failed to add any new players to their teams

After 34 days of excitement, big money deals and frantic transfer activity, the January transfer window has now closed, meaning Premier League managers will have to work entirely with the group that they currently have at their disposal unless they delve into the free agent market as Fulham did by by kick-starting advanced talks with veteran Willian in the closing hours of Deadline Day.

Over the course of the window, top-flight clubs spent a total of £382.8m on new recruits, in an outlay which represents a three-fold increase on last year’s tally when many clubs were forced to tread lightly with the threat of PSR and the threat of points deductions.

Defending champions Manchester City were the biggest spenders of the window, shelling out a league-topping £176.1m on big names such as Omar Marmoush, Nicolas Gonzalez, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis to try and rejuvenate their slow start to the league season and their hopes of progressing into the latter stage of the Champions League and FA Cup. But how did the likes of Chelsea, West Ham, Tottenham, Fulham, Crystal Palace and Arsenal compare, here’s all you need to know.

The Premier League’s biggest spenders

Manchester City spent a total of £176.1m on new recruits without making a single permanent player sale in the window. However, they did agree to loan out club captain Kyle Walker to AC Milan in a deal which does include an option for the Italian side to make it permanent over the summer. Strugglers Wolves splashed out £42.6m on new recruits while Brighton also invested a further £40m while making £3m on player sales.

Manchester United completed a deal for youngster Patrick Dorgu and spent £29.6m on new recruits in Ruben Amorim’s first window, with the likes of Antony and Marcus Rashford both departing on loan to Real Betis and Aston Villa respectively.

Spurs, after spending £12.6m, were the biggest in the capital alongside Crystal Palace (£12.5m), meanwhile Arsenal and Chelsea failed to bring any new recruits while also retaining the bulk of their first team squads, other than loan moves.

Fulham’s only signing is expected to come in the form of Willian on a free transfer after his short-lived spell in Greece with Olympiakos while Brentford brought in Michael Kayode on loan with an option to make the deal permanent over the summer if he is successful.
