Mikel Arteta has issued an update on Arsenal’s January transfer plans. The Gunners are preparing for a crucial transfer window after establishing a strong lead at the top of the Premier League.

Arsenal will return from the World Cup break five points clear of Manchester City in second place. Though, they will also return without lead striker Gabriel Jesus, who has scored five and assisted six so far this term.

Jesus‘ knee injury worsened during the World Cup, leaving him in need of surgery that will cost the striker at least 10 games, according to the latest reports. Arsenal are likely to need a replacement, while they could also do with another winger to take the pressure off Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli in a long season, especially given both players competed at the World Cup.

In an ideal world, another defensive midfielder would also be on the wishlist, but having spent over £100million in the summer window, Arteta may not be able to tick off all of those boxes. But what has Arteta said about his and Arsenal’s transfer plans?

Speaking after a friendly win over AC Milan this week, the Spaniard told reporters: “We are looking and we are active in the possibilities. If we can find the players that will strengthen the team, we will try.” He added on possible targets: “There are a few, and a few national teams as well. A lot of things they are doing are very interesting and it shows where the game is going, where it is evolving, but as for players – I’ll keep that to myself!”

Arsenal have been linked with a number of clubs ahead of the January window, which is a tricky window to pull off business, with clubs often expected to overpay to land targets at this time of year.
