Liverpool could hatch plan to hijack £67m Arsenal striker hunt as Ben Jacobs make key striker claim

Arsenal are battling to secure the signing of a 21-goal striker

Arsenal are expected to spend big once again this summer as they aim to bridge the gap between themselves and last season’s runaway winners Liverpool ahead of next year’s title race.

The Gunners finished second for the third season in a row last term and also went close to silverware by reaching the semi-final of both the Carabao Cup and Champions League.

However, they struggled to find the net anywhere near as frequently as they did in their two previous title pursuits and are now expected to splash the cash on a proven goalscorer that can take the team to the next level.

Arsenal have been linked with a series of different strikers throughout the summer but as it stands the name which seems to have the most substance is RB Leipzig wonderkid Benjamin Sesko after his 21-goal season across all competitions at the Red Bull Arena.

The 22-year-old has a proven track record in German football and is expected to blossom into one of the most formidable finishers in European football, but a recent report states that competition to secure the forward’s signature could be out to intensify.

Liverpool could hijack Arsenal’s move for Benjamin Sesko

Speaking on The Football Terrace YouTube channel, transfer guru Ben Jacobs has claimed Liverpool could yet join Arsenal in the race to sign Benjamin Sesko this summer.

The Reds have been the biggest spenders in the Premier League so far with the confirmed signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen while they are expected to add £45m rated Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez to their backline along with Frimpong’s teammate Florian Wirtz for a reported club-record fee in the region of £120m.

Liverpool are keen to cement their status as England’s top club and defend the league title for the first time since 1984. They are moving quickly to get deals over the line at this early stage and are still expected to be in the market for a forward before the window closes.

When discussing Liverpool’s potential activity, Jacobs claimed Sesko could be on the club’s radar. He explained: “The biggest question mark will be over the number nine and if they can genuinely go for Alexander Isak.

“Will they drop the £100m that Frankfurt are asking for Hugo Ekitike, they could even enter the race for Benjamin Sesko even though it feels like Arsenal are more advanced on that one at the moment.”

Benjamin Sesko to Arsenal latest

RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko now appears to be the preferred target as they look to sign a proven goalscorer that can compete with Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus next term.

The 22-year-old has been in exceptional form for RB Leipzig since arriving from Red Bull Salzburg in Austria and given his age, still has room to develop into one of the most feared strikers on the planet.

Reports suggest Arsenal are willing to offer around £67m to get the 22-year-old on board, with Sesko now appearing to be the team’s preferred option ahead of Victor Gyokeres from Sporting, who was previously linked.
