Newcastle United have reportedly tabled a bid of €40 million (£33.5 million) for Lyon midfielder Bruno Guimaraes as they continue to try and bolster their squad before the end of the January window.

The North London side have already experienced disappointment this week as it looks like their top target, Firoentina striker Dusan Vlahovic, is set to snub a move to the Emirates Stadium in favour of joining Juventus.

While Mikel Arteta’s side may not have an alternative lined up to the Serbian forward, they do appear to be close to securing a deal for another Brazilian midfielder this window.

Bruno Guimaraes is a 24-year old midfielder who plays for French Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyonnais.

The Brazilian international has the caught the eye with his impressive performances for Lyon in the French top tier and UEFA Europa League this season.

Guimaraes has made 25 appearances in all competitions for the French side this season while also featuring for the Brazilian international side in their World Cup qualifiers against Peru and Chile.

The former Athletico Paranaense has won three caps for his country in total.

Arsenal look set to miss out on Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic with the Serbian international looking likely to join Juventus instead.

It now looks like the Gunners will have to find an alternative to Vlahovic as they search for a new striker but a deal to bring a midfielder to the club this month is edging closer.

The Mirror are reporting that Arsenal are “stepping up” their pursuit of Juventus midfielder Arthur Melo this month.

The North London side have been linked with a loan move for the Brazilian for over a month but a deal has been slow in materialising.
