Queen Elizabeth II: Coffin lowered into Royal Vault as UK and rest of world say ‘goodbye’ for final time

The royal family, including King Charles III, will have a chance to bid the Queen a final farewell at a private service in St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle later on Monday evening.

The coffin of Queen Elizabeth II has been committed to the Royal Vault inside Windsor Castle.

Queen Elizabeth II will be buried alongside her late husband, Prince Philip, younger sister, Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, mother, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and her father, King George VI.

Queen’s coffin arrives at Westminster Abbey for State Funeral

There was complete silence from the crowd close to Parliament Square, as the State Gun Carriage carrying the Queen’s coffin slowly moved past.

The crowd, momentarily still and with phones held aloft to capture the moment, was around 10-people thick in places, as tens of thousands thronged the streets to say goodbye to the monarch.

A moment of silence was held on The Mall.

Security guards asked members of the public and media to stop talking at 10.55am.

The Queen’s coffin has arrived at Westminster Abbey and has been carried inside by the bearer party of Grenadier Guards ahead of the state funeral service.

The short procession from Westminster Hall, to the sound of bagpipes and with Big Ben tolling, took around eight minutes.

As the coffin entered, the Choir of Westminster Abbey sang lines, known as The Sentences, from Revelation 14:13, set to music written by William Croft and used at every state funeral since the early 18th century.

The Queen’s coffin was carried from New Palace Yard towards Westminster Abbey on the Royal Navy State Funeral Gun Carriage.

The coffin was followed by the King and other members of the royal family on foot, including the Prince of Wales and Duke of Sussex.

The route through Parliament Square, Broad Sanctuary and the Sanctuary is lined by Royal Navy personnel and Royal Marines.

The arrival of the sailors pulling the carriage at New Palace Yard at around 10am, was heralded by the sound of their boots tapping loudly on the cobbles.

King Charles III makes his way to lead the procession from Westminster Hall to Westminster Abbey

The King and the Prince of Wales passed Horseguards Road in a car at 10:31am.

The Duke of Sussex was in a car behind them.

They waved at the cheering crowds as they drove past.

Former Prime Minister, Boris Johnson and his wife, Carrie Johnson, have arrived at Westminster Abbey ahead of the Queen’s state funeral.

Mr. Johnson resigned officially as prime minister when he visited the Queen two days before her death in Balmoral in Scotland.

Then Prince of Wales, Charles, became King Charles III at the moment of his mother’s death.
