Sitting in one of the most exclusive districts of London, an Indian restaurant is celebrating 20 years in business with a £139 tasting menu taking customers back through the decades.
Benares opened in Berkeley Square, Mayfair, in 2003 and has held a Michelin star for 16 years.
When you enter, you are led upstairs to a spacious dining area that is elegant without being stiff. Popular with the area's high-flying business community, it is still relaxed enough for a family meal.
The price is clearly in the high-end range, but what you get is a sumptuous meal, crafted over a period of years.
Executive chef Sameer Taneja was previously head chef and prioritises a menu based on British ingredients, but pairing Indian cooking with French techniques. The eight-course anniversary menu he has put together pays homage to the restaurant's signature dishes over the years, including king crab and egg masala, and tawa halibut and clam moilee.
A vegetarian tasting menu features black truffle and white chocolate galouti kebab, samosa ragda tartlet, paneer tikka pie and courgette kofta biryani.
Wine pairing is available for both menus, and cocktails are available, inspired by Indian spices, including an excellent negroni, aged for a minimum of three months, made with Jaisalmer Gin, Raisin Infused Campari and Antica Formula (£20).

1. Street Snacks
The first course is made up of street snacks in tribute to India's roadside food vendors. The selection includes bread pakora, a John dory fritter and particularly delicious gol gappas shelf into which you pour a refreshing apple water. | Benares
