‘Clear penalty’ - Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard hits out after rash challenge from Man City star Rodri during Norway’s defeat to Spain

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard hit out at the decision not to award Norway a penalty after he was clattered inside the 18-yard box during the 3-0 loss to Spain on Saturday night.

In the first half, and with the game at 1-0, the Man City midfielder was late with a challenge on the Arsenal man but despite the referee being in close proximity, he waved play on.

Odegaard had got his shot away, which may have impacted the referee’s decision making, before caught by Rodri. The incident came just minutes after Dani Olmo had put Spain 1-0 ahead.

Joselu scored twice in three minutes late in the game to seal all three points for Spain but Odegaard was unhappy about Rodri’s challenge at full time.

He told TV2: “I’m pretty sure I should have had a penalty. He’s coming with his studs right on my ankle but I’m sure I’ll get punished [if I say anymore].

“I don’t bother saying anything else about the referee. It’s better not to say anything.”

Norway manager Stale Solbakken was also frustrated by the decision, insisting it is was a clear penalty.

He added: “It is a clear penalty! He finishes the shot and you can’t [foul him]. If I knock someone down after the ball is gone, then it’s a penalty. I get a little bored of this.”

A similar incident occured during the top-of-the-table clash between Arsenal and Man City earlier this season as the Gunners were awarded a penalty after Ederson had fouled Eddie Nketiah following a shot on goal.

Arsenal scored from the spot as Man City went on to claim a 3-1 win in a gripping contest. Both clubs are back in action this weekend with Arsenal hosting Leeds United while City are at home to Liverpool.
