You might think to yourself whenever you return to your car and see a parking ticket that there must be certain areas where traffic wardens are busier. You would be quite right in thinking that, as insurance company Churchill discovered which boroughs of London have the highest rates of parking fines.

By using a freedom of information request, the insurance company contacted 230 different councils around the UK to determine both the number of parking fines issued between January 2020 to June 2021, alongside the amount of revenue it generated in each area.

The analytical team then broke those numbers down into two lists: one specific for London and the boroughs that responded back, while the other list regards those authorities outside of London that have the highest number of parking fines across the dates used. The results compared the total amount across the three year span and Islington residents might want to be careful from here on in.

The borough of Islington had the most parking fines across all the London boroughs in 2022, issuing a daily average in 2022 of 1012 fines which then generated a daily revenue stream of £44,799. Despite having a higher level of fines handed out, it did not top the list in terms of daily revenue generated.

That award goes to Lambeth, who despite having 23 less daily fines handed out, managed to amass £48,424 in revenue from some hapless drivers in London. Surprisingly, the City of Westminster was fourth in Churchill’s list of London boroughs, despite it having an infamous streak being difficult to both drive and park around.

Outside of London, Birmingham served up the most fines in 2022 with 373 issued, though there was no total advised regarding the revenue made per day. Nicholas Mantel, Head of Churchill motor insurance, said: “Motorists across Britain are regularly being caught out by increased and sometimes complicated parking restrictions.”

“We would encourage drivers to always check parking signs carefully to ensure they avoid any expensive fines. If motorists do receive a parking fine, they have 28 days to pay it or appeal to an independent tribunal."
