There are several changes to bin collections across London’s 32 boroughs this Christmas and New Year - with some residents facing more changes than others.

With bank holidays on December 25, December 26 and January 1, there are many changes to bin collections over the next couple of weeks.

Here is the situation in all of London’s boroughs, and the city itself, with information from the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Barking and Dagenham

Bin collection top tips from the council

  • leave your bins by the boundary of your property by 6am on your collection day (only put bins on the street if you don’t have a front garden or drive)
  • put your rubbish inside your wheelie bin with the lid closed shut
  • visit the council’s what goes in each bin page if you’re not sure what goes where

Barnet

Recycling and refuse bin collection days will be revised over the festive period. This will affect bin collections between Monday, December 23 and Saturday, January 4 January.

Blue recycling bin and black refuse bin collections will return to normal collection days from the week commencing Monday, January 6.

Annual winter pause to garden waste collections

The annual six-week pause to garden waste collections runs form Sunday, December 8 until Sunday, January 19. The first collections in the new year will either take place on Saturday, January 25 or Saturday, February 1.

Christmas tree collections in January 2025

Real Christmas trees placed at the boundary of your property will be collected on Saturday, January 11 or Saturday, January 18. Please ensure your real Christmas tree has all decorations and tree lights removed, is cut in half and put at the boundary of your property by 6am.

Bexley

There will be no collections on Wednesday 25 December, Thursday 26 December and Wednesday 1 January. Waste and recycling collections have been revised as follows:

  • Monday 23 December - no change

  • Wednesday 25 December moves to Friday 27 December

Garden waste service will be suspended from week commencing Monday 23 December for two weeks and will resume on Monday 6 January.

Brent

In Brent, all rubbish, garden waste and recycling collections will be affected by the Christmas and New Year bank holidays. Over Christmas, bins will be picked up two days later than residents’ usual collection day, whilst over New Year it will be the following day, writes Grant Williams.

Therefore, normal Wednesday collections (December 25) will be on Friday (December 27), Thursday collections (December 26) will be on Saturday (December 28), Friday’s (December 27) on Sunday (December 29). In the New Year, Wednesday’s collection (January 1) will be on Thursday (January 2), Thursday’s (January 2) on Friday (January 3), and Friday’s (January 3) on Saturday (January 4).

There will also be no bulky waste or small items collection on bank holidays with the Abbey Road Refuse and Recycling Centre also closed on December 25 and 26, as well as January 1.

Bromley

  • Wednesday 25 December (Christmas Day) moves to Friday 27 December

Camden

Some recycling and rubbish days will be different over the festive period.

Collections from Wednesday 25 December to Friday 27 December will take place two days later than usual. If your usual collection day is:

  • Wednesday 25 December, your collection will be on Friday 27 December
  • Thursday 26 December, your collection will be on Saturday 28 December
  • Friday 27 December, your collection will be on Sunday 29 December

Collections from Wednesday 1 January to Friday 3 January will occur one day later than usual. If your usual collection day is:

  • Wednesday 1 January, your collection will be on Thursday 2 January
  • Thursday 2 January, your collection will be on Friday 3 January
  • Friday 3 January, your collection will be on Saturday 4 January

Collections return to their normal schedule from Monday 6 January.

City of London

The City of London Corporation is running an altered bin collection service over Christmas and New Year.

For residents who live in a property with no bin store and so need to place their rubbish on the street there are several days with no collection planned. Evening collections will be slightly earlier than normal during the festival period, writes Ben Lynch.

A service will also be run collecting real Christmas trees between December 27 and January 17. All decorations must be removed as the trees will be mulched and used in parks and gardens.

To book the service, call the City of London contact centre on 020 7606 3110. Residents living on estates will need to contact their estate office for information on Christmas tree skip locations.

The City of London Corporation also has a range of tips and advice for reducing waste over Christmas, including donating unwanted gifts and recycling items such as mince pies and metal biscuit tins.

Croydon

Recycling and waste collections for residential properties in Croydon will occur later than usual over Christmas 2024 and New Year 2025, writes Harrison Galliven.

Collections scheduled on Wednesday, December 25, and Thursday, December 26, will take place two days later. This means waste scheduled to be picked up on December 25 will be collected on Friday, December 27 instead, for example.

Collections on December 27 will take place three days later on Monday, 30. Those planned for New Year’s Eve will now come on January 2.

Collections planned between December 31 and January 2 will arrive two days later, and those planned for December 3 will arrive three days later, on Monday, June 6.

Collections scheduled between Monday, January 6, and Friday, January 10, will occur a day later. Collections of recycling and waste will return to normal from Monday, January 13.

Christmas tree collection

Croydon Council is running a Christmas tree disposal service on January 6. Residents are advised to put their trees out by 6 a.m. on that day.

To ensure bin crew collection, all decorations must be removed from the trees and visible outside your property. Trees must also be removed from their pots.

Residents will also be able to recycle their genuine Christmas trees free of charge at the household refuse and recycling centres across the borough.

If you subscribe to the council’s garden waste collection service, you can also cut it up and put it in your garden waste bin.

Ealing

Between Monday, January 6 and Friday January, 24, those who use the black and blue wheeled bins can leave their real Christmas trees on the front edge of their property for collection, reports Philip James Lynch.

Trees will be collected on the same day as your revised rubbish collection (black bin) each alternate week.

Tree trunks must not exceed 20cm in diameter, or be more than six feet tall (taller trees can be cut in two). Residents are asked to ensure all decorations are removed.

If you live in a flat or use a communal bin service you will have to take your real tree to one of the councils parks or open spaces. This runs until Friday 24 January 2025.

Christmas tree collections

If you have subscribed to the garden waste collection service, you can place your real Christmas tree out for collection on your scheduled garden waste collection day. You must remove all decorations, pots and turf from your tree as these cannot be recycled. If your tree is taller than 6ft, please cut it into smaller pieces (otherwise it cannot be collected) or take it to one of the parks listed below.

This year North London Hospice are introducing a free Christmas tree recycling service to selected postcodes in Enfield. For more information visit North London Hospice.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council is also running a free Christmas tree recycling service between January 2 and 22. For those who normally get an on-street rubbish collection, leave the tree in the same place on the regular collection days before 7am.

Any residents leaving trees out are asked to ensure they are real, clearly visible, not obstructing any pavements, and that all decorations and pots are removed.

Trees can also be dropped off at designated locations across the borough, a list of which is provided on the council’s website.

The local authority is asking residents to recycle the following products, ensuring they are clean and dry:

  • Plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays

Harrow Council has confirmed that there will be no bin collections of any kind on any of the bank holidays, writes Grant Williams. Residents have been advised that they may have to leave their bins out on two days to ensure that they are collected.

If your usual bin collection is on a Monday, this will go ahead as normal on December 23. However, if your bins are typically collected on a Tuesday, residents have been advised to leave their bins out on December 23 and December 24 as they may be picked up on either day.

If Wednesday is your collection day, residents have been advised to leave their bins out on Tuesday 24 and Friday 27, if Thursday then on Friday 27 and Saturday 28, and if Friday then also on Saturday 28.

Over New Year bank holidays, residents are to leave their bins out the following day. Therefore, if it scheduled for Wednesday (January 1) the bins should be put out on Thursday (January 2), for Thursday leave them out on Friday (January 3), and for Friday on Saturday (January 4)

Residents can enter their postcode on the council website to find out exactly when the bins for their road will be collected. All Garden waste bin collections will pause for two weeks over the Christmas period.

Havering

Revised collection dates for orange and black sacks and clinical collections. Normal collections resume on Monday 13 January 2025.

Hillingdon Council has asked residents to leave their rubbish out for collection by 6am, near the front gate but not on the pavement, writes Philip James Lynch.

In January, you can recycle Christmas trees with usual garden waste collection, providing:

  • All decorations and pots are removed
  • Trees taller than 6 foot are cut in half
  • Your tree is placed at the edge of your property boundary and visible to collectors.

If you live in a flat:

  • Collections are available between Monday, January 6 and Friday, January 17. Residents are advised to email [email protected] to book a collection
  • Trees should be placed next to your bin store or collection point for waste bins, ensuring access to the bins is not blocked. Residents are asked not to put trees inside the communal bins.

Islington

The council will continue to collect waste and recycling over the Christmas period. Depending on your usual collection day, your collection may take place a day later than usual.

Please put your real tree with the rest of your recycling on your property on your scheduled recycling day or take it to one of our drop-off points.

There will be nine public drop off points set up temporarily, in addition to the Reuse and Recycling Centre at Hornsey Street. These are:

  • Elthorne Park
  • King’s Square Gardens
  • Rosemary Gardens
  • Wray Crescent, park end
  • Spa Fields
  • Tufnell Park, Campdale Road
  • Highbury Crescent, next to playground entrance
  • Paradise Park, Lough Road / Mackenzie Road entrance

They will operate between Tuesday 2nd January through to Sunday 14th January. Please note, only real Christmas trees will be collected.

Kensington

Rubbish and recycling collections continue as normal except for Thursday 26 December 2024 where bins will instead be collected on Monday 30 December 2024.

Christmas tree recycling

If you can’t compost your Christmas tree yourself, the best way to recycle your real tree for free is at one of the council’s drop-off points. This helps to keep our pavements and streets clear.

The council has drop-off points across the borough and these are available from Thursday 2 January to Sunday 19 January 2025.

If you can't take your tree to a drop-off point, the council can collect it on your rubbish and recycling collection day between Thursday 2 January and Friday 17 January 2025.

Real Christmas tree collection

Real Christmas tree collections will start from Monday 6 January 2025. The council has told locals to make sure it is out by 6am. It should be collected within 2 weeks.

Remember to remove all decorations, pots and lights. Put your tree close to the front boundary of your property, visible to collection crews and so it will not block the pavement. If you live in a flat, put your tree outside the bin store but do not block access to it.

Alternatively you can:

  • take your tree to be composted at the Villiers Road Household Reuse and Recycling Centre
  • leave it next to your rubbish bin on your collection day (it will not be recycled)
  • chop it up to create a winter shelter for animals in your garden or add it to your compost heap

Lambeth

Collections do not change on most bank holidays. This year over the festive period, your collection day will change. Collections will resume as normal from Monday 6 January 2025.

Christmas tree collection services in Redbridge

Local charity Haven House is collecting and recycling Christmas trees from January 10-13 for a small donation that goes directly towards their work. Collections must be pre-booked. Haven House is a children’s hospice where children can be children, even in the face of adversity. Their facilities offer a range of activities, such as music therapy, play sessions, and fun days, that enable children and families to create precious memories.

Redbridge Council will collect real Christmas trees to recycle. To ensure collection you must:

  • Leave your tree at the boundary of your property by 6am on Monday 6 January
  • Remove all decorations
  • Ensure your tree is clearly visible

There is no fee for the service. Real trees will be collected anytime between January 6 and 17 so please ensure your tree is placed at the boundary of your property by 6am on Monday 6 January to avoid missing collection.

Christmas tree collection

Sutton Council is running a Christmas tree disposal service from January 6 to 17. Trees should be left outside properties between that two week period.

All decorations must be removed from the trees and they must be clearly visible outside your property to ensure bin crew collection. Trees must also be removed from their pots.

Residents will also be able to recycle their genuine Christmas trees free of charge at the household refuse and recycling centres across the borough.

Christmas tree recycling

There will be a collection for the recycling of real Christmas trees from Monday, 6 January to Friday, 17 January 2025. If you currently receive a food and garden kerbside collection, the council has said to remove all decorations from your tree and leave out for collection on your scheduled day during this period.

If you don't get a food and garden collection, ask your landlord or management company to arrange a collection. You can also take your tree to the Reuse and Recycling Centre on Yabsley Street in London.

Waltham Forest

Over the festive period, there will be changes to bin collection days during Christmas and the beginning of the new year. Residents are asked to put bins and the outdoor caddy out for collection on the revised scheduled collection day.

The council will collect your real Christmas tree to ensure it is recycled. It is offering a free collection service for real Christmas trees from Tuesday 2 January. To have your real Christmas tree collected it must:

  • not be larger than 6 foot / 1.8 metres
  • not have any decorations or container/stand at the bottom included
  • not have other items mixed in with the tree
  • the stem of the Christmas tree to be no bigger than 4 inches / 10 cm

Please note if your property normally receives two or more rubbish or mixed recycling collections a week, you will not receive a special Saturday collection. Please use your other regular collections in the week.
