London weather for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day: Met Office forecast as wet start predicted for 2023

With only a few days till we say goodbye to 2022, many Londoners are wondering if their plans to ring in the new year will be impeded by rain. If you have plans to spend the weekend outside, you'll want to know if the weather will cooperate.

New Year’s Day falls on a Sunday this year and London is the place to be for spectacular firework displays, which attract thousands of visitors from throughout the country each year. But firework displays may be hampered by the wet weather that London is likely to experience this weekend.

According to the Met Office, like most parts of the UK, the Capital will be greeted by heavy rain or showers, as well as strong winds as people are out and about for the countdown. Here is the weekend’s whole weather forecast so you can find out when you need to have your umbrellas and raincoats at the ready.

London weather forecast ahead of New Year’s Eve weekend

Thursday, December 29 weather forecast

London will experience strong winds easing somewhat during the day with a mix of sunny spells and showers. There will also be a risk of hail and thunder mainly in the west with  maximum temperatures of 9C.

Friday, December 30 weather forecast 

According to the Met Office, London will endure a period of unpredictable weather with intermittent bands of rain or showers and strong gusts. A heavy downpour is forecast to begin at 9am and linger until noon, with wind gusts reaching 30 mph. However, Friday evening is expected to be dry until at least midnight.

New Year’s Eve weather forecast

On Saturday, London will see a rainy start with light rain beginning as early as 6am and lasting until noon, when it will intensify into heavy rain. From 3pm to 6pm, light rain will persist and from 9pm, light showers are likely.

A downpour is expected at midnight, so your plans to enjoy the firework display may be disrupted by the unsettled weather.

Despite the wet start leading up to New Year’s Day, the Met Office says Sunday will remain dry for the rest of the day with a maximum temperature of 11C.
