Seven people left the building before the London Fire Brigade (LFB) arrived.

And six adults and a child were led out by firefighters using escape hoods to protect from toxic smoke.

Hoods offer up to 15 minutes protection from toxic carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, hydrogen chloride and acrolein gases.

Firefighters received six 999 calls about the blaze and told residents inside how to survive.

People in the building were told to stay safe by stopping smoke entering their flats using blankets and towels, moving to a room with an open window and staying low to the ground.

At 6.18am, BBC Radio London Travel said Buckingham Palace Road was closed heading southbound from Lower Grosvenor Place to Victoria Street due to a building fire.
