A man is fighting for his life after crashing a car into a gas mains in Upminster, with residents forced to evacuate from their homes over safety fears.

Met Police officers were called at 6.10pm on Sunday, June 26, to junction of Front Lane with the A127, after reports of a crash.

Officers attended, with the fire brigade, paramedics and the Air Ambulance.

A black Mercedes had left the road and smashed into a gas main.

The driver of the car was taken to hospital, and police said his condition is “life threatening”.

Roads in the area were closed and some residents were evacuated from their homes, however all roads have now been reopened.

The collision is being investigated by officers from the Serious Collision Investigation unit based at Chadwell Heath. There have been no arrests.

Police are appealing for any witnesses, including those with dash cam/mobile phone footage, who have not yet come forward to contact the investigation team by calling 020 8597 4874 or 101 quoting CAD 5664 as a reference.
