Shocking footage shows the concrete pouring down the road and completely blocking one side of the key north London transport artery.

The lorry is completely stuck and workers are trying to remove the liquid or push it into drains before it sets.

The spillage, which is between the junction with Green Lanes and Wilmer Way, in Enfield, happened at around midday.

Drivers travelling eastbound should leave the A406 at New Southgate and rejoin in Tottenham.

Traffic is still running on the North Circular westbound.

There is heavy traffic in other roads in both Palmers Green and Bounds Green.

The emergency has effectively blocked locals who live in the Bowes Park low-traffic neighbourhood into their homes

Jason Russell asked Enfield Council: “What mitigations are there in place for residents in situations like this when the A406 is closed off for an emergency?

“No access for the ambulance service, fire brigade, police or residents. We’re trapped.”

The Bounds and Bowes Voice, anti-LTN group, said: “We have always been clear in our concern that LTN implementation gives no thought to the consequences on days such as today when the A406 has to be closed.

“It makes a very difficult and potentially very dangerous situation far, far worse.”

While Ediz Mevlit commented: “Due to LTNs, roads are closed and residents need to do a two-mile detour to get home without getting a council fine.”

And Mr Mevlit also said he was worried the workmen were pushing the concrete down the drain.

He added: “My concerns here are they are pushing some of the concrete down the drain which will eventually block.”

Enfield Council staff members informed residents that LTN cameras would be relaxed while the A406 was closed.

Enfield Council said: “The section of A406 which is closed is between The Clock House at Palmers Green and Powys Lane. Both directions are closed.

“Thames Water has been washing down the carriageway since 1.30pm.

“Traffic can come down Brownlow Road (northbound) and turn left but not right onto the A406.

“The Bowes Area LTN is not within the critical area for the traffic flow as it is west of the closed area but we have temporarily relaxed restrictions within the LTN to make it easier to access to the A406 westbound at Brownlow Road.”

TfL, which is responsible for the A406, said a crew was currently clearing the concrete, but it was impossible to put a timeframe on when this would be completed and the road would reopen.
