Stabbing in Lewisham: Man in ‘critical condition’ after being attacked on high street

The police have special stop-and-search powers until 3am November 6, known as a Section 60, after the violent altercation in which the man was stabbed on Bromley Road in Downham.

This means police can stop and search anyone in the immediate vicinity without needing to provide reasonable grounds.

Lewisham Police posted a tweet stating: "A Section 60 is in place until to 03:00hrs on 06 November within the area shown area after a 21-year-old man was found with stab injuries in Bromley Road, Downham. He remains in a critical condition."

Emergency services were called to Bromley Road, Downham, which is between the borough borders of Lewisham and Bromley, after being informed of a stabbing at around 11.40pm on Friday, November 4.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 11:38pm yesterday (4 November) to reports of an incident at Bromley Road, BR1.

“We sent a number of resources to the scene including an ambulance crew, a medic in a fast response car and an incident response officer. We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance in two cars.

“We treated a person at the scene and took them to a major trauma centre as a priority.”

The assailant is still at large and police say that no arrests have been made and are now appealing for anyone with further information or witnesses to contact them quoting crime reference number 8645/04nov.

The overall crime rate in Lewisham in 2021 was 85 crimes per 1,000 people. This compares favourably to London’s overall crime rate, coming in 1.5% lower than the London rate of 87 per 1,000 residents. For England, Wales, and Northern Ireland as a whole, Lewisham is the 24th safest city, and the 972nd most dangerous location out of all towns, cities, and villages.

The most common crimes in Lewisham are violence and sexual offences, with 8,695 offences during 2021.
