The holy month Ramadan is due to begin this weekend, in which Muslims will fast during daylight, meaning they will not eat or drink during certain times in the day.

What is Ramadan?

During the month of Ramadan, most muslims fast between dawn and sunset, this means no food or drink will be consumed during certain hours during the day.

Fasting allows Muslims to devote themselves to their faith and is understood to teach key values such as self-discipline.

Children, pregnant women, the elderly and those who are ill do not have to fast.

Children are not expected to fast until they reach the age of 14.

When is Ramadan?

Ramadan is a month long-tradition observed by Muslim’s worldwide every year, it falls on the ninth month of the Islamic calendar.

The dates are decided on the cycles of the moon, and in 2022, Ramadan will begin on Saturday, April 2 and will end on Sunday, May 1.

There is no set date for Ramadan, and it starts when the new moon first appears in the night sky. The full moon is to indicate the halfway point of Ramadan and as the moon moves to the other side, Ramadan finishes.

As the month progresses, the time observing fasting increases as the sun sets later and later each day.

What time is Iftar and suhoor?

During Ramadan, Suhoor is consumed before sunrise and the Fajr prayer, and Iftar is consumed after the sun sets and after the Maghrib prayer, which is the fourth prayer of the day.

What and when is Eid?

In 2022, Ramadan ends on Sunday, May 1 which means that Eid al-Fitr follows on the day after, Monday May 2.

Eid signals the end of the month of fasting, and is usually celebrated by Muslims gathering together in large groups and eat festival food, exchanging gifts, but a lot of people celebrate it differently too.

After Eid, some muslims then fast for another six days. This is because there is a belief that a good deed in Islam is rewarded ten times. So another six days on top of the 30 days prior will create a year of good fortune.
