No, there are not giant slugs swimming around London’s sewers, despite a viral TikTok video.

An unnerving clip showing what appeared to be a slimy creature in London's underground sewers went viral on TikTok this week.

The five second video, uploaded on Wednesday (November 20), showed a man wearing high viz walk through a sewer pipe before reaching into the water below to hold up a bizarre looking organism.

As the video goes on, the man, who is holding it with two hands, brings the creature closer to the camera, showing off its unique look before the video ends.

A text overlay on the video claims the organism is a sewer slug, adding it was rare to see such a large one in London’s underground waterways.

Posted by a TikTok account named The London Sewer Explorer, the video has already garnered almost 15.5 million views.

The London Sewer Explorer TikTok page has a number of other videos showing other odd creatures it claims to have found in London’s sewers which have all been uploaded in the past week.

However, there is no need to be worried about what’s lurking in our sewers as commenters on the post have since identified it as being AI generated.

One user wrote: “this is by far the most realistic AI video I've ever seen” While another added: “Nice AI clip. The dead giveaway is the lack of water dripping from the slug.”

Stitching the original video user @Kuyakimatienza also explained the clip was fake and AI generated as the London sewer has freshwater and the species of slugs seen in that type of water only grow to be one or two inches in size.
