Omicron Covid variant: More than 800 suspected cases in London - how many in your borough?

It comes after the prime minister warned of a “tidal wave” of Omicron cases in a televised address to the nation following a torrid week in which the Conservative party was hit by allegations of rule-breaking Christmas parties.

Hundreds of cases of the Omicron Covid-19 variant have been confirmed across London.

The capital has seen a surge in cases of the latest coronavirus variant as it spreads across the UK.

Some 252 cases have been confirmed in the city, while a further 582 suspected cases have also been counted, making the full total 834.

Suspected cases are found when scientists analyse the virus looking for a DNA marker called the S-gene, which is present in Delta cases but missing in Omicron and Alpha.

Once identified, swabs showing the so-called ‘S-gene dropout’ can then be sent for definitive testing for Omicron.

While the first death of an Omicron patient in the UK has been confirmed by the government, the BBC are reporting.

In London, Newham is topping the list for confirmed cases, with 18 Omicron patients in the borough as of Monday, December 6, and Lambeth is close behind, with 17.

Hackney and the City of London have a combined 13 cases.

While Havering, Sutton and Redbridge are at the other end of the spectrum, with one, two and three cases respectively.

When it comes to suspected cases, Barking and Dagenham has 47, while Greenwich has 44.

Bexley has a total of 43 suspected cases of Omicron across the borough.

And Harrow has just three suspected cases, while Sutton and Westminster have five each.

Finally, in terms of combined and suspected cases, Barking and Dagenham totals 55, while Lewisham and Greenwich both have 53.

Sutton has just seven combined and suspected cases, while Harrow and Hounslow have totals of just 10 and 11 cases.

The government is urging the public to take up their booster jabs, with the rollout being expanded to all over-18s from today (Monday, December 13) and over-30s encouraged to book appointments.

Bookings via the NHS website will be opened to 18-30s from Wednesday.
