For some the May half term holiday might seem like a long time away, but the reality is that the first half of the summer term will no doubt go by as quickly as it has come around.

The holiday is one which is looked forward to by both parents and children alike, as it is a chance to have a break from the classroom and get out and about in (hopefully) good weather.

The week also breaks up the summer term, which is over 12 weeks long.

In preparation of the May school holiday, here’s all you need to know about when schools in London will finish, how long the summer term is, when the bank holidays in May are and when pupils in London will head back to school for the 2022/23 calendar year.

Following the return to school, pupils will be back for around seven weeks before finishing for summer.

When are the bank holidays in May?

The early May Bank Holiday is the only Bank Holiday in May this year.

In 2022, this falls on Monday, 2 May. This will mean children will have a long weekend as schools will be closed on 2 May.

This also means that children will be back at school for just one full week before the next bank holiday weekend.

The next bank holiday of the year after this is set to be during the four day weekend at the start of June for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Two bank holidays fall on Thursday, 2 and Friday 3 June 2022.

These will be the last bank holidays before the August bank holiday, which will fall on Monday, 29 August 2022.

This will feel like a long wait for a bank holiday after having three in relatively quick succession.

If you feel like getting away from London for the half term holiday, there are plenty of sunny destinations on the continent you can visit.

Turkey, Malta and Cyprus all have average high temperatures of 24°C or more in May, and all three of these countries can be visited from London airports.

There are flights from London Gatwick to Malta, Paphos in Cyprus and Dalaman in Turkey, meaning that there are plenty of chances to get away next month.

When does the 2022/23 school year start?

Following the summer holiday, pupils in London will return to the classroom at the start of September for the start of the autumn term of the new academic year.

Across London, this first day of the school year will vary between 2 and 6 September 2022.
