Pupils, staff and parents came together at Harris Primary Academy South Kenton this week as the school hosted its first-ever community Iftar to help parents break their fast during Ramadan.

The school joined the Harris Federation in September 2024 and is creating a nurturing environment where pupils enjoy and respect different cultures and traditions.

The Iftar was organised by the Academy’s staff and a dedicated group of parent volunteers who wanted to bring the community together to break their fast and celebrate in the spirit of Ramadan.

As the sun set, signalling the time for Iftar, families gathered around the tables adorned with colourful decorations and traditional dishes such as dates, samosas and curries. The warm and welcoming atmosphere was a testament to the collective effort of parents, teachers and volunteers who ensured the event was a huge success.

The fast was broken after one of the students in Year 6, Hussein, performed the call to prayer. Hussein said of the occasion:

“It was amazing to see so many people come together to celebrate something that means so much to my culture. It made me feel so good being able to share this with my friends and teachers from school.”

Reflecting on the event, a parent said: My family and I enjoyed a really warm and special evening breaking our fast with friends, families, students and teachers at Harris Academy South Kenton. It was really incredible to see the community engagement the school has shown since the transition. Well done to Mr Hyneman for leading from the front and joining in fasting for the day. We’re looking forward to the next one!"

Mr Rob Hyneman, Headteacher at Harris Primary Academy South Kenton said: “Our first Iftar was truly a momentous occasion for our school, which is committed to celebrating the backgrounds and traditions of all the families who make up our wonderful Academy community. In hosting this Iftar, we are not only acknowledging the traditions of our Muslim families but also helping all students and community members learn about the importance of Ramadan and the value of sharing meals and stories together.”
