Cricklewood care home residents celebrate the start of Wimbledon with local tennis club

Residents at Lansdowne Care Home in Cricklewood were delighted to welcome members of Coles Green Tennis Club for a morning of tennis activities to mark the start of The Championships at Wimbledon.

As well as enjoying an expert coaching session in the garden, the ladies from the club shared their tips for the ones to watch at Wimbledon this year and encouraged residents to share their own tennis experiences and memories of the game throughout the years.

Some residents could remember listening to Fred Perry winning the men’s singles title for the third time on the radio in 1936 and watching Dorothy Round win the women’s singles title in 1937, the first year that The Championships were broadcast on TV.

Resident, Patrick, said: “What a great morning. It’s been a long time since I picked up a tennis racquet and it brought back lots of happy memories of when I played in my younger days.”

The care home’s Magic Moments Coordinator, Jyotsana Shrestha, said: “Huge thanks to Coles Green Tennis Club for coming along to Lansdowne Care Home give our residents a wonderful morning of tennis activities. Over the next fortnight, we’ll all be gathering in the lounge to enjoy strawberries and cream and a glass or two of fizz together as we follow all the action at Wimbledon.”
