Fresh update in West Ham's chase for £34m-rated striker signing as David Moyes hunts for lethal goalscorer

West Ham United have suffered a 'major' blow in their pursuit of a Bundesliga centre-forward.

West Ham United are interested in a move for Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface in the January transfer window - but a recent development has seemingly scuppered their chances of bringing him to the London Stadium this month.

Boniface is currently out of action with a groin injury and is not expected to be match fit again until March. According to Football Insider, due to this, the Hammers will now not seek to snap him up in the ongoing transfer window.

Currently, West Ham can only call upon Danny Ings and Divin Mubama up top - talismanic forward Michail Antonio is currently out with a long-term injury.

Which other strikers could West Ham sign in January?

While the Hammers may well miss out on Boniface, he is far from the only option available to them. Another player they could go for is Serhou Guirassy, who also plays in the Bundesliga for Stuttgart.

His goal record this season is something to behold, having found the back of the net 17 times in 14 games. He is currently out with a hamstring injury, however - this could make passing a medical complicated. Like Boniface, Guirassy could be a fantastic signing - but the timing of his injury is unfortunate.

There is also Joshua Zirkzee, who currently plies his trade for Bologna in Serie A. If they go down this route, they will not be alone - Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal are also interested - but the Hammers may be able to offer him a more prominent role in the squad as opposed to their London contemporaries.

Brandon Thomas-Asante, currently playing for West Bromwich Albion in the Championship, could provide a cheaper option. He has scored nine goals in 26 league games this season - these numbers are not especially inspiring, but with his contract due to expire in 2025, he won't command an astronomical fee.
