Battersea Power Station pier: Dozens evacuated from Uber Boat as firefighters tackle Thames Clipper blaze

Dozens were evacuated as firefighters spent 90 minutes tackling a blaze aboard a Thames Clipper at Battersea Power Station pier.

The fire service was called to investigate reports of a fire on board the vessel at 10.07am this morning (Tuesday, September 20).

It came after concerns were raised earlier this morning at the south London commuter service pier.

Six fire engines and the fire boat were sent to the scene.

Four crew members and 31 passengers were evacuated before the firefighters arrived.

Speaking to LondonWorld, a London Fire Brigade (LFB) spokesperson said: “It was a very small fire in the engine room and it is out now.

“Around 31 members of the public and 4 crew disembarked before we arrived

“There were no reports of any injuries.”

Its understood the level of response was more due to the location of the blaze than the severity of the incident.

The incident was over for firefighters at 11.31am.

The LFB spokesperson previously said: “We are investigating an incident on a clipper at Battersea Power Station pier.

“At this stage we’re investigating reports of a fire on a clipper [and] trying to ascertain how big it is.”

The power station pier is currently closed until further notice, Uber Boat confirmed while the fire service was investigating.

In a tweet, Uber Boats said: “Due to an ongoing incident, Battersea Power Station Pier is currently closed until further notice.

“Please check back here for further updates.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this causes.”

The fire service will provide an update on the incident shortly.

What is the Uber Boat service?

The Uber Boat by Thames Clippers service stops at 24 piers along the Thames between Barking Riverside Pier in east London and Putney Pier in the west.

Thames River Bus services were launched in 1999, and in August 2020 began partnering with taxi app Uber - withtickets now available via the Uber app.

Services are licenced and regulated by Transport for London (TfL)’s river division, and TfL also provides Oyster ticketing systems, service information and owns some of the Thames piers.
